AABNet’s recent efforts to scan the animal breeding landscape have shown high gaps regarding human capacity and potential for genetic evaluation across African countries. One of the flagship programmes underpinning AABNet’s long-term strategy is the establishment of a centralised genetic evaluation centre and database, offering robust genetic evaluation remotely accessible to all African countries. This platform will support the collection, computation, storage, and sharing of high-standard data among animal breeders, associations, and professionals at national and regional levels. Interventions will yield and support: delivery of animals with superior genetic merits from breed societies, farmer groups, and cooperatives; standardised stakeholder tools and methods for data collection; and genetic evaluation based on traditional pedigree and genomic methods. The African Dairy Genetic Gains (ADGG) – the prototype of an Africa-led multinational genetic evaluation platform – is jointly developed and hosted by AABNet.
